Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
